The Heiress

I don't usually go to plays and musicals, but in the past week, I've gone to two. This weekend I saw "The Heiress" at the Pasadena Playhouse. It was wonderfully done and centers around a well-off doctor in the mid-nineteenth century and his practical yet cold perception of his kind yet awkward daughter.

I think the reason I enjoy plays, music, and literature is that you can explore the deep dramas of life and relationships without having to personally experience the painful moments yourself. I usually walk away feeling I've experienced or understood something very profound.

Is there a play or book that taught you something about life? Which was it?

  1. I looove The Heiress, it is based on a Henry James book, called Washington Square that I read many, many years ago. There is a great movie version, an old one, with Olivia de Havilland and Montgomery Cliff (well before your time and my time too, but I remember seeing the movie with my parents). The Broadway production of the play was very successful. Watch the movie and you will love it.

My favorite book, or I should say one of my favorite books, is Pride and Prejudice. A lot of people do not like Jane Austin. But I learned a lot about British society and the role of women in society through her books. And I just loooove the mini-series with Colin Firth, the best Mr. Darcy, much better than Lawrence Olivier.

  2. My favorite novel of all time is Kurt Vonnegut's Cat's Cradle. I don't think it taught me anything new, although it did make me think a lot. It was very smart and entertaining, and it certainly made me appreciate Vonnegut's amazing ability to write.
